Bikes for good causes!

21 Jun

Its that time of year again when we start the rebuilding process on some of our donated cruisers from yesteryear.

We strip them down, send them off for repainting and then start to build back up from scratch to be better than ever, all in an effort to raise funds for good causes. This years proceeds are going to an organization trying to find alternative treatments for cancer.

We try and mix the old with the new as best we can, with new parts such as Shimano Nexus 3 speed hubs, rims, tires, pedals, seats, handlebars and grips, while trying to re-use what original parts we can such as the crankset, headsets, stems, seatposts etc.
Once the bikes are complete, Katie from Downtown Betty whisks them away for a photoshoot with volunteer models, with the photos to be used in a fundraising calender for this years cause.
Last year proceeds went to the Breast Cancer Foundation and the Living Oceans society. Check Downtown Betty’s site for more info.
Above is a shot from this years calendar that we just got sent through!

Later in the year there is an invitation only fashion show/auction where the bikes are auctioned off with most of the proceeds being donated to charity. The bikes that do not sell on the night we sell over at our Broadway store. Last night on that night alone almost $4,000 was raised!

It’s always a fun and worthwhile project to get involved in, and with most of the proceeds going to a charity it really is for a good cause.

Speaking of good causes, we have given over 200 free kids bikes away this year already!!

We accept used bike donations of all kinds at all of our stores. In the case of kids bikes we always fix them up and give them away for free, either to local charity organizations, or when they are at capacity, we put them out on the FREE TREE so that hopefully every kid in the area has a bike to enjoy!

It’s always nice when we hear back from the kids, check some of our previous posts for samples of thank you letters, or the testimonial page over at Vancouver Bicycle Recycling

This is the latest card we got from a very happy kid! Hopefully everyone will have such a fun summer!!
